Wow – what a wonderful response to my request for photos of scrap quilts! All of you who sent me photos and stories made writing this week’s post a real joy! And I absolutely love the variety 😃.
One of the first photos I received was from the person who inspired me to love scrap quilts – Lori. She wrote “Here’s a picture of the first scrap quilt I did. I learned a lot, that’s for sure!”
I wrote back “Amazing! Your first one and you were already into complicated piecing!” and her response was “Well, it wasn’t my first quilt. I had to make a few to have enough scraps to make a scrap quilt.” She is a very humble and talented quilter!
Then our mutual friend, Eileen, sent a photo of her current project using a large variety of blues. She wrote: “Here’s a pic of what I’ve been working on, as promised. Lord willing, I’ll make this into a bed quilt for a full size bed.” – Beautiful!
Jan wrote – “I like “controlled” scrappy.”
I would add she likes brights too 😊! As I looked more closely at the pattern of her second quilt I noticed it was done using a block I did a tutorial on last year. It’s a fun block and a great place for scraps. To read that post click here.
Jackie sent me a number of quilts to share. These are her comments on this first one: “Made star groups out of leftover fabric from shorts fabric. First quilt, hand pieced and hand quilted. I just couldn’t throw away that fabric. It was too small to make something with. I was new to quilting and didn’t want to spend any money on the fabric. The white is Muslin from retired curtains. Oh have times changed. My sewing room is full of fabric!“
Jackie really made some fun shorts to have all those bright scraps 😁!
Next she wrote: “Asked for scraps from my quilting friends. Except for the black, no two fabrics are the same. It is a king size quilt.”
I love that charming yet simple pattern! She wrote that this next quilt was made from her “plaid stash”.
And her email ended with this final comment: “This is my favorite. Good for small pieces because you sew a strip with 3 different fabrics. It is 64 x 64.“
I’m glad Jackie moved from clothing to quilts – she certainly has a knack for sewing with scraps.
Mary wrote: “This is a scrappy one I made with just Christmas material leftovers.”
What an interesting block!
Barb emailed me: “This is the favorite scrappy quilt I made using the Drunkard’s Path pattern. It was made many years ago when I first started quilting. Love your blog.”
Thanks Barb – love your quilt 😊!
Donna sent a photo of her quilt along with a detail shot, and this explanation “Yes, I am addicted to saving small pieces of fabric. The pictures below show a scrap quilt. Those particular scraps are from a charm pack of all novelty prints that I used to make an eye spy quilt for grandkids. I did not use any foundation. I just kept sewing pieces together until I was able to cut a 4.5 inch square out of it. I think, if I remember correctly, the eye spy quilt had something like 200+ novelty prints so that’s a lot of scraps!
It’s not a favorite quilt per say but it was very satisfying to be able to use all those scraps. It’s an interesting quilt to look at and it’s meant to be used. I set each block with a checkerboard fabric.“
I find this quilt quite unique – it doesn’t scream “eye spy” from a distance, but there is a delightful surprise when you come in for a closer look.
Marianne says scrap quilts are her favorite type of quilts and she is currently making six quarantine quilts using her scraps.
Quarantine Quilt II
This one will be a “kid’s quilt”:
She labeled this one “2 inch scraps”:
I so enjoyed all the creativity and beautiful results.
Sending out a huge

Two of my favorite items are two of my grandmother’s quilts. She hand pieced and hand quilted a wedding quilt for each child and grandchild from old worn out family clothing. I love the fact that mine (fan pattern) was made from clothing i and my sisters wore. I also found the quilt (a pattern of circles) she made for my parents in my mom’s hope chest after she died. Because it was used, then packed away, it has both the loving wear of being used AND the bold bright colors from being protected.

Thanks for the scrappy quilt show! I love scrap quilts and have been spending the last few months going though my scraps and have two quilts so far. My friend, Jo, got me interested in scrap quilts a long ago and I could see how they were much more interesting to look at. Plus, you get to use ALL your fabrics even the ugly ones you don’t know why you bought.
Happy Scrapping, all!

These were all so amazing! I love scraps and have bags and bags of them. I even take other people’s scraps! I’ve done some small wall hangings, but nothing big yet. Still working through the quilt tops I’ve done, and dying to get to the ones I have planned. And now I have a long arm machine! Not enough hours in the day!
