Before I begin, I just have to share the view from my window after yesterday’s beautiful snowfall!
You may disagree, but I do love winter 😊.
And now for the topic of the week…
I had a number of you request the instructions for the charity quilt top I made last week.
The lovers knot variation of the log cabin block has always intrigued me, but when I saw what Jo did with it at last week’s retreat, I knew it was time for me to make one.
The piecing is simple, but when the blocks are put together the pattern is anything but simple.
The block is made log cabin style around a square that is bordered on just two sides.
Jo showed me the original pattern made from 3 blocks. The background (yellow) was the same in each, but the prints were different (hers were teal, gray and purple). She then explained that she made the gray and teal blocks according to the pattern, but she accidentally reversed the purple block so that the outer long logs were of the background fabric and the center was the print. She decided to play with her innovative variation on the design wall, instead of remaking the purple blocks, and was pleased with the results.
I grabbed one of the charity packs of fabric I had picked up at guild. It contained three 1 yard pieces, so my quilt would only have two different blocks, but I was ok with that. I cut the background fabric into 2 1/2″ strips. Then I cut half as many 2 1/2″ strips from the coral and green prints.
In my mind I decided to keep the blocks the same as in Jo’s original pattern (print on the outside of the block), but then I made the same “mistake” she did and I to am very pleased with the results 😊.
Here are my blocks:
And here’s the order of piecing:
Thanks for sharing this fun pattern with us Jo!

Thanks for sharing your blog Chris. I so enjoyed our retreat together. Amazing how a mistake can take off. I can’t wait to make another one of my “mistake quilts”

This is really cool, especially the red/green colors. I may have to try this one myself.

I love these mishaps. Sometimes they turn out to be the best liked quilts. You whipped that quilt up fast. You always amaze me.

On the Lovers Knot did you start with a 2 1/2 by 2 1/2 in square.

The beginning square was cut from the original strips, so it was 2 1/2″, finishing 2″. My blocks finished 8″.
